A torrential downpour drums against the windows of a Chinatown apartment building as an N-train rumbles over the Manhattan Bridge. A late-night set by a local Brooklyn band rings in the New Year while fluorescent lights in corporate offices high above the Midtown streets emit their low, persistent hum. Back on the street, a chorus of languages coalesce into collective musing. In the city that never sleeps, nothing is ever silent.
