At the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup—the highest level of international football in the world—a diasporic, underdog group of young women represent the debutante country, the Philippines. Despite all odds, they emerge as the tournament dark horse, beating the World Cup hosts on “enemy” soil, and netting their country’s first goal and first win at the World Cup. Reina, Filipino American team center back, brings us along on this turbulent journey, culminating in an intimate trip to her grandmother’s hometown in the Philippines, where she unravels a dark family history that both shatters and inspires her.
