Chieko explores the poignant memories of her parents’ fateful decision during the chaos of the bombings of Tokyo in World War II—her mother and father opting for one path while her grandmother and other family members chose another, ultimately resulting in their tragic death in the fire. Today, Chieko rediscovers her mother’s love for colors and patterns, and incorporates these elements in her painting series, “In Loving Memory,” which commemorates the passing of her mother two years ago.
