Dispatches from the AAIFF08 Frontlines
CITIZEN KIM
Submitted by blogger on Wed, 07/16/2008 - 17:06.CITIZEN KIM. No, not CITIZEN KANE, the legendary Orson Welles film that boasts to be the best US film of all time, but the play about a Korean struggling to get a green card to remain in the US and continue his American Dream which AAIFF had chosen for this year's Screenplay Reading.
T-7 hours
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 07/10/2008 - 12:17.We're off and running as we countdown the hours to Opening. Like long-distance runners coming 'round the bend, reaching the home stretch means the adrenaline has only begun to kick in—it'll be a sprint to the finish line. Or maybe it's more like cycling, and everyday brings a new round in the same race. We can also think of the ups and downs of Tiger's dramatic play at this year's U.S. Open...
Intern Diary: More Honest and Frenetic
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 07/09/2008 - 11:03.Violently her accusatory finger shook before my eyes, her sharp nail
threateningly close to my sweaty face. I cannot decipher the angry words
spewing from her mouth, distracted by the condensation appearing in the lenses
of her eyeglasses and the awkward convulsions of her face. This one vivid
imagery within my nonsensical, kaleidoscopic dream that night clung onto me for
days. My fellow intern told me, "That's when you know that it's getting to
you."

Intern Diary: Weekend Edition
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 07/06/2008 - 12:47.It’s 11:00 on a Sunday morning, and, of all places, I’m at the ACV
office, writing a blog entry instead of doing actual work. It’s not a bad
place to be, really, it’s just that it’s, well, Sunday morning. Of course,
as an intern I didn’t really come into this thinking I would have much say in
the matter of what hours I would actually like to work, so I can’t say I’m
all that surprised. But still, with the festival just around the corner, there
is still a lot left to do and it’s getting a little hectic around here. As an
Intern Diary: I love movies.
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 13:53.I love movies. And I’m not saying that as an admirer or as a fan. I’m
saying that as lover, and a scorned lover at that. No matter how many films I
obsess over or how many directors and actors I’ve studied, I can’t seem to
crack the code and become part of this society. “TELL ME THE PASSWORD” I
want to scream.

Intern Diary: One week out
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 11:05.Hello to all. As I approach my ninth week on board the AAIFF ‘08 crew, I find myself in a crash course on how film festivals are run. My job is to pretty much spread the word. I initially lacked some confidence in what I was getting into. I just wanted to be immersed in film culture. And this is exactly what’s so great about the internship and the Film Festival in general. They are outlets for nobodies, anybodies, starting from the bottom (be you the mere intern or the first time director of an obscure indie film) to have an opportunity to learn, communicate, grow, and become somebody.
Intern Diary: A salute to our lovely volunteers
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 11:41.Ah, spring time at college. A lot of things are happening then—professors struggling in vain to convince themselves they still have a grip on their students' attention, seniors crying about having to enter the real world, bunnies procreating… But one phenomenon that seems to happen without fail is the frantic search for jobs and internships—under and overachievers alike trying desperately to find a way to get paid, embellish their resumes, or, at the very least, get out of that dreaded house.
Intern Diary: First Post
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 15:30.I picked up my first incoming phone call today at the box office. I was so nervous because I couldn't really remember everything in our program (103 films!) but everything went well in the end. After this calls, I felt like I should be more prepared for the calls so I went over the program again and wrote down their genre or wrote down a word or two words describing the film so I can direct people better.
